(See ) We recall as a rookie copy editor/reporter at The Bay City Times in being enthralled, along with everyone else in Michigan, about the opening of the Seaway. The opening of the St Lawrence Seaway had a profound impact on railroads and communities in the USA and Canada. It reduced export traffic that formerly went by rail to Atlantic ports, significantly weakening rail carriers that served New York harbor, Baltimore and Philadelphia. This was a factor in the bankruptcies that led to Conrail.
